The Greek Divas; Mykonos V Santorini

Updated: Jan 22

Would you ever go to Peru and not visit Machu Picchu or Paris and skip the Eiffel Tower? Despite what you might hear about the crowds, cruise ships, and prices, we understand you want to visit at least one of the two Greek Divas. Instead of describing these islands and their highlights (which you can find everywhere), let's focus on what to do and what not to do:

  • Avoid bringing small children: In Santorini, the beaches aren't ideal, and the island is better suited for enjoying good food and wine. Mykonos has fantastic beaches, but it will be costly compared to other beach destinations. Plus, you’ll enjoy your cocktails more with your special someone or friends. If you have teenagers, however, Instagram-worthy spots abound, so go ahead!

  • Accommodation tips in Santorini: If budget allows, stay in one of the top caldera-view hotels in Oia. If the prices are low, be cautious—they often come with many stairs, tiny rooms, and limited privacy. Alternatively, stay in a less touristy village like Megalochori, which offers superb hotels with great value for money.

  • Timing your visit to Oia: Visit Oia either very early in the morning or after sunset to avoid the crowds.

  • Catamaran cruise choice: If deciding between a catamaran cruise on the two islands, opt for Mykonos for its crystal-clear waters and top-notch swimming experiences.

  • Best time to visit: Try to avoid the high season, especially in Santorini, where traffic can consume a lot of your precious time. In Mykonos, if you love nightclubs, aim for July and August when famous DJs perform, and epic parties take place. Avoid the shoulder season if you’re a partygoer, as most clubs open between June and September.

  • Must-sees: Don’t miss a winery visit (or several) in Santorini and a visit to the archaeological site of Delos in Mykonos.

With these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy the best of what Santorini and Mykonos have to offer while avoiding common pitfalls. Have an amazing trip!
